Beneath the Trees Gallery and Studio started with a short drive through the country with Douglas, my husband, the finding of a cute 1950’s contemporary building that seemed to have possibilities, then waiting for the right things to come into place. Things came together, and then with a lot of hard work and tender loving care the gallery came to be.
I originally opened Beneath the Trees Gallery and Studio to have a comfortable place to work on and show my ceramic art. I wanted to express my passion through the creation of unique one of a kind clay free form sculpture and share that experience with others. Along with that venture came thoughts of having a ‘few’ other artists display their art to fill the walls with artistic endeavors, and have fun! Soon after starting this venture, I realized there was a lot of great artistic talent in this area, and a huge desire for other artists to show their work. There were also artists knocking at the gallery door looking for the opportunity to display their talents. The desire for art in the community just seemed to grow… and along with that the gallery soon began receiving inquiries about art classes and workshops. So, with those inquiries and with the talents of our artists, they will be hosting classes and workshops at the gallery and in the renovated studio space in the barn. There will also be class space available at our other building on the Riverfront in downtown Allegan. As for the original gallery, I love seeing new artist's talent and being excited by their work. If I’m excited by it, then I believe our patrons will be too. I’m looking for what is appealing not the latest trend or style. I’m open minded with options of new art or new mediums because art is about each individuals passion. It’s you that will ultimately choose a painting or sculpture because you identify with it. I want the gallery to feature artists and their extraordinary technique, to maintain freshness, and present art that is enjoyable and that is pleasing to your heart and soul. Each individual artist brings their passion and experience by providing art in many different styles, so I will focus on presenting various styles of art in a creative manner. You may see landscapes and abstracts displayed together, but as long as the colors work together and it feels right to have it in the gallery as such, it will be there for you to experience each artists point of view. When you walk into the gallery you will know you need to take home that piece of art that moves you. I also find the need to give other artists the opportunity to show their talents, and to provide opportunities within the community. So in that venue and with the constantly evolving artistic talents of our area, please enjoy Beneath the Trees Gallery and Studio. Cynthia E.
